U.S. Space Command Deputy Director of Strategy, Plans, and Policy Speaks at DSEI Japan 2023

By Staff Report U.S. Space Command

U.S. Space Command deputy director of strategy, plans, and policy U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Jesse Morehouse visited Japan March 14-17, 2023.

While in Tokyo, Morehouse spoke at Defense and Security Equipment International Japan 2023, a large-scale, fully integrated defense conference featuring attendees from over 65 nations.

On March 15 at DSEI, Morehouse participated in a panel focused on security and international cooperation in space. His comments focused on USSPACECOM’s commitment to a growing network of allies and partners.

“The increasing exploitation of space-based opportunities has made space more congested,” explained Morehouse. This has resulted in space becoming more competitive for us all. In this landscape of a congested, contested, and competitive space domain, the objectives of U.S. Space Command are to ensure space remains sustainable, safe, and secure in order to allow for unfettered space access and the freedom to operate in a responsible manner for all like-minded nations. We know we cannot accomplish such challenging objectives alone. We will only be successful if we pursue these goals in collaboration with like-minded nations, who we refer to as our allies and partners.”

Morehouse was joined on the panel by U.K. Space Command commander Air Vice Marshall Paul Godfrey, and moderator, Japanese Lt. Gen. (retired) Jun Nagashima.

Also, while at DSEI, Morehouse had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a variety of senior partner nation military officials to include Japanese Air Self-Defense Force Chief of Staff Gen. Shunji Izutsu, Chief of the General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces Maj. Gen. Robert Glavaš, and Air Vice Marshall Godfrey of UKSpaceCommand.

As democratic anchors in the Indo-Pacific, the United States and Japan share a commitment to defending freedom and democracy, supporting opportunity, upholding human rights, and respecting the rule of law.

USSPACECOM, working with Allies and Partners, plans, executes, and integrates military spacepower into multi-domain global operations in order to deter aggression, defend national interests, and when necessary, defeat threats.
